Knit Crochet Blog Week Day Two

Day Two (Tuesday 12th May): It’s All About You.
Cast your hooks and needles aside!

This year you are challenged with one of those tasks that some bloggers can find quite daunting: but there’s never a better time then when we’re all in it together, so let’s shift the focus and turn the attention from the things we make to the things that make us.

I've never been one to delve into my personal life very much.  I guess that talking about my projects, the yarn I use and the patterns I like ,is personal to a certain extent.  To other knitters just talking about yarn is probably very personal.  I've been thinking about this prompt all day in fact.  I thought about explaining what I do for a living, but Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Technology/Medical Laboratory Science, whatever the heck we're supposed to be calling ourselves now, tends to be rather complex.  The simplest explanation is that I analyze blood and body fluids such as urine.  I perform complete blood counts, basic metabolic panels, types and screens and urinalysis just to name a few.  Lab Tests Online is a great resource for explanations of test names and what they're looking for.  Next time you go to the doctor and get some blood work done, think of me.  I'm the invisible person testing all the blood you had drawn.  It is very rarely glamorous, but I find it extremely interesting.  Each tube of blood is a mystery, a puzzle for me to solve.  I work with computers and big analyzers with probes, tubing, drains, valves, lots of mechanical stuff.  Not everything I do is automated.  About 30 percent is still manual.  So I work with reagents, stains, microscopes, tubes and slides.  I guess you could say my profession is as much art as it is mechanical.  It's a lot like knitting when you get right down to it.  There are several ways to hold the needles and produce tension, but ultimately a knit stitch is a knit stitch.  The art is picking the color yarn, the fiber type or dying it yourself to get the perfect color.  Then pairing the yarn with a pattern and vice versa.  If you knit a pattern that calls for bulky yarn with fingering, the dimensions probably wont work quite right.  Just like if you try to run a CBC through a chemistry analyzer...  (What you'll get is a Hemoglobin A1C, which is not a CBC, but is important when monitoring diabetes.)

I wish this is what I looked like at work.

Apart from being a scientist in real life, I also have a love of science fiction.  My love of the shows Stargate and Star Trek should be evident to my regular readers.  I'm also a fan of many other shows, the more recent of which have a fantasy overtone.  I enjoy reading, again I like science fiction.  I also love animals.  I grew up on a dairy farm in Northern New York, so my love of animals began very young.  Eventually I want to have a small hobby farm of my own.  If I have my way it will be filled with fiber producing animals.  Realistically I'll probably have a couple rabbits, a goat or two and maybe some ducks.  In the mean time, I have three lovely cats to spend my knitting time with.

I like to do outdoor things.  But not right now, as the trees are budding and the pollen turns me into a walking sneezing machine.  Since we've moved to this new apartment we can have bird feeders.  We have three, a normal bird seed feeder, a suet feeder and a hummingbird feeder.  I had no idea it could be this fun to just bird watch.  On a daily basis there are birds at all three.  Yes, we've already had hummingbird sightings!  I suppose I'm becoming an old maid.  Sitting here knitting while watching my favorite shows and the birds at the feeders... oh well.  Boring is fine in my book.  Alright enough about me.  Who is everyone else?
Tune in tomorrow for another topic.
Until later.  Happy Crafting!

  1. Fascinating, I have had a LOT of blood tests in the last few months so it's interesting thinking about what happened to it all!

  2. HI Quazar. Looks like you have some interesting hobbies. I am also doing the KCBW Challenge. This is my first year of it and my second year as a knitter. You are a fun bunch - well, knitters in general by what I've seen of the group so far.

I am alone in my knitting. Like you, I knit to give my binge television viewing some sense of credibility. I am addicted to it. My yarn pile is getting out of hand so I am working this summer to knit things and use it up so I can buy more stuff without the guilt that balls of yarn will someday take over my living room. My blog is www.myartfulabundantlife.com. I hope you will stop by and say hello.

  3. I do think your job is interesting, and much better than the people who take the blood ! :)

Year of Projects: Week 13

I've started my "new" job/contract.  I've worked for this company before, just not at this site.  I brought a few projects with me, but I quickly ran out of yarn.  I've been working on a dishtowel.  I'm combining two patterns to make it.  I'm using the premise of  Stay Put Kitchen Towel  with the stitch pattern of  Lizard Ridge Dishcloth .  I, of course, don't have a picture yet of the towel.  I took my book of postcards and colored pencils with me.  I've colored in two of the postcards in between knitting.     When I got home at the end of the week, I had two packages waiting for me.  I received an angel package for one of the swaps I did a few months ago. The cowl and headband are made from handspun yarn.  They are very soft and pretty.  My angel got me a lanyard set perfect for fall.  The black kitty looks alot like Jangles and the flowers are very fall colored.  There's a pair of snippy style scissors.  I love this style of

Year of Projects: Week 6

I dont have too much to report on the completion front.  I'm working overnights for this contract and I just have no energy.  I tend to stay on my night schedule on my days off and sleep all the rest of the time.  I have been working on some dishcloths.  I pretty much always have a couple going.  I really should have put that on my list of projects for this year.  I've been looking back through past project pages and I'm knitting a few patterns again that I liked knitting the first time.  In the case of the ones I've just done, I've knit these many many times.  The pattern is  Tricolour Dishcloth .  It's in my top 5 dishcloth patterns of all time.  I have the pattern memorized and I enjoy it very much.  It takes three colors and doesnt use much yarn.  It's great for using up small scraps. Its also got a ton of texture, so its very scrubby.  I need to weave in the ends yet but here are the three I did in the last two weeks.

Year of Projects: Week 11

I'm actually updating on a Sunday for once!  I don't have too much to update, so it'll be short and sweet.  I had mentioned that I washed and blocked the Drops of Spring Mitts.  I got them off the blockers and took a couple decent pictures outside in good light.  So here they are all finished. I used the smallest size of the three blockers.  The middle size stretched the fabric too much.  Blocking really evened these out and even though I didn't toss these in the dryer to spring the super-wash Mal Rios back into shape it sproinged back all on its own.                        I need to weigh these yet so I can figure out approximate yardage used, but my guess is its not really much of either of the three colors.  I hope to do at least one more pair of these.  I have so many little mini left-over skeins, its a great pattern to get those used up.     I made homemade pizza on Wednesday.  I use  this  recipe in my bread machine for the dough.  It calls for a teaspoon of a
