In the Veins of the Drowning by Kalie Cassidy. I think this book broke me. In all the good ways that a book can break you. This was phenomenal and I'm legitimately in a book slump now. This story was very interesting; very different from other fantasy stories out there now. The Sirens in this were very unique. I also really liked the magic system in this. The characters who had power by in large had it from lineage because they were blood descendants of the gods. The gods being flesh and blood and living very lengthy lives. There was spell magic as well, but it was not common and took a great price from the user. There are blood bonds and undead creatures beneath the sea. I was intrigued with the narrative right from the beginning in this one. This was a seriously slow slow-burn. The tension in this was thick and nearly palpable. There was spice but it was sparse and hard won at the 73% point in the book. Okay there was some mild spice at the beginning of the book but it wasn't between the two main characters so I'm personally not counting it. There was a lot of intrigue in this. Many many secrets were revealed slowly, several characters were interconnected and we learned the implications of these connects bit by bit along side the FMC. This book ended on one hell of a cliffhanger. I should have seen it coming a mile away, but I didn't and was completely shocked when the book just ended. I'm really sad that the next one doesn't come out until July of next year. Luckily I was alone when I finished this book because there was not so silent screaming. I absolutely loved this roller coaster ride. The writing was phenomenal. The push and pull among the two main characters. The longing of belonging somewhere and wanting to be happy vs duty, honor and expectation made for a great story. I really don't know how all this is going to get resolved in the next book. I do know I'm invested in Theo and Imogen's story and I truly am hoping for some sort of happy ending for them both. I'm not sure how that will be possible but July can not come fast enough. From my very rudimentary research it looks like this is a debut novel for Kalie Cassidy, which surprises me. It certainly read like a more experienced novelist.
