5★ 3🌶
I finished Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver a couple of days ago. It. Was. Amazing. Going in I honestly wasn't expecting to be blown away by this book. I'd seen enough about it on Bookstagram to know what some of the book was about and I wasn't sure if I was going to be down for murder and gore. The death and destruction is really secondary to the plot and I do work in the medical fields so it wasn't that big a deal for me. The banter in this book between the two main characters is next level. The FMC is smart, independent and a bad-ass. She does however have some anxiety and sociability issues; she's a loner. Apart from the murder aspects I could see bits of myself in both of the characters. I also appreciated that this entire story took place over the better part of 4 years, so it wasn't insta-love and truly a slow burn. I really enjoyed Brynne Weaver's writing style. This was also a duel POV first person which I've found I prefer so that may have something to do with it as well. I will certainly be reading the other two books in this trilogy.
A Tongue so Sweet and Deadly by Sophia St, Germain
Meh, I DNF'd at about 12%, I think. I just could not get into this book. This is going to sound unhinged considering what I normally read; I thought the names were dumb and overly fantasy-ized sounding. The characters were flat and the writing was so dry. I probably gave up too soon and maybe I'll try again at a later date but I don't think this series is for me. I was forcing myself to just read one chapter each evening for a couple days and then I just asked myself why? I enjoy reading now, this isn't high school. I can read what I want and stop reading what I'm not enjoying. So instead I started reading In The Veins of the Drowning. This is much better with much better writing and I'm enjoying this one. I'm already at 16% or so.Happy Reading
