YOP: Week 43

I nearly forgot it was Sunday and time for another blog post.  I didn't post last week as all I've been working on is the Boo Halloween MKAL.  I'm finally on the last clue and I hope to make some more progress today.  I have pictures from each clue but they're terribly lit night pictures as that's when I was able to finish each clue.  So I think I'll wait 'til I have it done and blocked before I show off mine.  There are plenty of pictures of other's shawls in the spoiler threads of the Boo Knits group on Rav if anyone really wants to see the Enchantress Halloween MKAL.  Here's a link to the group if anyone wants to take a gander: Boo Knits.  While I'm at it I'll throw in a plug for Boo Knits.  There is always a KAL of some sort going on and all of Boo's lace designs are beautiful and fun.  Beverly AKA Boo is very active in the group as well, and she answers questions especially when doing MKALs as they are new patterns.

So what have I been up to over the last two weeks?  Cleaning and homework mostly.  It's gotten chilly here and it looks as though its going to stay that way so we put away all the light summer jackets and such and have gotten out all the winter apparel.  I went through everything and passed on all the small stuff.  I organized the bins inside the new bench and washed and blocked a whole batch of knits.  I have a bin for each of us so hopefully all our hats, gloves and scarves will stay organized... if everyone puts their items back where they belong.  (I already know everything is just going to get piled on top of the bench and I'll be the one putting things away, so its organized for me I suppose.)

Tub full of soaking knits

The scarf on the left, my second Turnstile, bled quite a bit yet again.  But it looked okay once dried.  I ordered some custom tags from Etsy for the knits I've made for the kids.  I've been reluctant to send the kids to school with my handknits incase they lose them.  Liara is pretty good about keeping track of things, but Ronon has already lost several items he was sent with.  The pre-K class has a few helpers, but if they don't know which items belong to which children, its easy to send them home with the wrong item.  I had the tag shop put the kids names on the tags so maybe Ronon's things will return with him.  We'll see.

I ordered a batch if supplies from Joann Fabric.  I did a pick-up in store to try that out.  I also grabbed the two items I forgot to put in my order, some more jump rings for stitch markers, when I went in to pick it up.  I got some more fusible interface and quilt batting so I can make some more bags with the fabric I already have.  I also bought more fabric, because well, why not.  Halloween fabric was on sale, so I got a few more prints.  Halloween is my favorite holiday and I'll use a Halloween themed project bag year round.  The pick-up option worked quite well, so I expect to do that again in the future.

We have a local company lined up to replace our heating system.  That's supposed to happen tomorrow.  We should be getting my car in to be fixed as well either this week or next.  I've also gotten a second job.  I have orientation the week after next.  I'm going to pick up some hours in the evenings at the hospital lab in Lowville.  My second class for this semester started this past week.  It's Medical Terminology.  Since I've been in the field for the last 20 years, I've already familiar with most of the terms but its great to be learning how to break down the words and understand all the parts.  I was always amazed that medical terminology wasn't a requirement for my profession, which is why I took this as an elective.  That's really about it for me.  I hope anyone who celebrates has a lovely Halloween!  Until later, happy crafting.

I'll leave you with pictures of the kids in their costumes.  The school does a Trunk or Treat each year and we like to go to that.

  1. Great costumes! Hopefully all the repairs go well and are not too expensive.

  2. The kids look cute. I was in Healthcare for over 40 years and medical a terminology course would still be able to teach me new things. Not to mention the spelling of several diseases and procedures.

  3. Love the costumes. I enjoy Halloween and have lots of kitchen towels and guest bathroom decorations. Since we live in the country we haven't had a trick or treater in the 32 years we have lived here. Used to take the kids to my in-laws neighborhood to trick or treat. Sounds like a fun trip to JoAnn's. Lots of fun projects. Good luck with your new job and class.

Year of Projects: Week 45

No post last week as we were all down with a nasty stomach bug.  I finally started feeling better on Friday.  I didn't get very much done because of it.  I didn't even get out of bed last Sunday.  I was able to finish the  Sunset Hat .   I think it turned out nicely.  I was worried the Glitter and the Sunset colorways would be too similar, which is why I put the English Rose in between them, but I think the combo works pretty well.  I finished up one more dish cloth; another Star Fish type so I won't post another identical picture.  I've made one more dishcloth since the Nerdopolis tournament ended on the 30th.  We're in a break month now.  I had hoped to get a few rows done on my Holden shawl, but that didn't happen.  I'm going to try to get it done this month.     There is a fiber festival in June, the CNY Fiber Fest, so I'm starting to plan for that.  I went last year and it was very fun....

Knit Crochet Blog Week Day One

Day One (Monday 11th May): If You Were Yarn. If you were a type or brand of yarn, which would you be? Are you a classic pure wool? Is there extra tension but a bit of bounce in you because of your high twist? Would you be more like a high-maintenance, strictly hand-wash fluffy angora or a ‘bring it on’ acrylic, bravely heading into the world of possible baby-sick laundering disasters knowing that you will always come out bright and unharmed?      If I had been asked this question back in January of 2014 I think my answer would be very different from the one I'm about to give today.  Since that time I have started my second new job and have moved my entire household to a smaller city.  Granted the move was what I wanted, but there has been a transition period for me after leaving everything I'd known and become accustomed to behind after 12 years.  I've made new friends twice, gotten used to different policie...

Year of Projects: Week 33

I started a pair of socks for myself.  I'm not good about checking gauge for anything.  So very quickly I realized the sock was looking very small.  I decided to keep going and make them for Liara instead.  I had her try it on after I turned the heel and it fit her perfectly.   I finished the first sock already.  The yarn is ONline Supersocke 100.  (This yarn and several other skeins were given to me by my Aunt Linda a few years before she passed away.)  I'm using a pattern from one of my physical pattern books.  One of my goals last year was to use more of my books.  I started out strong then tapered off through the year.  So I'm renewing that goal for this year.  It's the Handpaint Highlight Socks by Leah Oakley from the One Skein Wonders book.  I'm going to needle up a bit and still make a pair for myself.  I'm going to make them shortie socks though.  I think I'll have enough yarn for...
