Year of Projects: Week 47

I found another skein of Mal Rios in the Cucumber colorway in a Ravelry destash.  It arrived Friday so I wound it and worked a little more on my Killer Queen Cowl.  I had to tink back a row because reading is hard.  I finally finished section 2 and have started decreasing.  The rows were starting to feel very long when I was at the widest part.

My county fair board has finally put the 2024 handbook online.  I've been checking the last few weeks and now it's finally there!  It seems like quite a few classes have been removed, likely due to low participation in those classes.  I've done a preliminary submission plan.  I tried to fit things I've already completed into categories because there are only 8 weeks until the fair.  Two of the items I want to submit are in progress and three potential entries haven't been started yet.  I'm probably being overambitious, but that's half the fun for me.  Last year I was finishing one of my items the morning I had to do drop off.  More on this to come.  The fair is one of the events I look forward to every year and now that I've been an exhibitor for the past three years; I plan the first half of my knitting year around it.

In non-knitting news that's going to deeply impact my time for the next few years.  I'm going back to school!  I've wanted to get a Bachelor's degree for some time.  I did a little inquiring into a bridge program that uses all the credits from my Associates and work experience.  Everything fell into place very quickly.  I found I would only need 3 pre-requisites before starting the program, so I enrolled into those classes already.  They start right after Memorial Day, then if everything goes as it should I'll be starting the UAMS bridge program in August.  I'm both nervous and excited.  I'm trying to finish up a few projects before class begins as I suspect I'll have very little time for anything else.

Tuesday will mark three years that we've owned our house.  This past week we've been going through everything in the basement and garage and re-evaluating its ownership status.  We sold our two snowmobiles to a member of my husband's family.  We moved along some of the kids clothing and "baby" items we're no longer in need of.  We donated several totes of DVDs and kitchen items to a local thrift shop.  It was sad to see a few things go (the snowmobiles especially), but overall, it's been a great feeling to unclutter our space.  I found several items I had been looking for as well.  My sewing area is in the basement, and it had gotten overrun with all the totes of stuff.  It's all cleared out now and I can sew again, which is perfect timing since one of the items I want to submit to the fair is a sewn project bag.  I'm keeping all my sets of China.  I repacked two sets that were in a cardboard box.  That box was packed up when we moved from East Syracuse 10 years ago, then moved 4 more times after that.  Two plates from one set broke but that was it.  In hindsight, I should have taken pictures of before and after.  I think that's about it for this week.  Until later.  Happy crafting.

  4. Good for you! Going after your dream is admirable. I bet it felt good to go through all the stuff in your basement. Your county fair sounds like a lot of fun. Inused to go to them all the time. Not so much anymore cause no one else want to go with me.

YOP: Week 37

I didn't do any crafting what so ever this past week.  We had my parents and brother over for lunch on Sunday.  I cooked up some of the green beans from my garden that I had frozen.  They were very good.  We had a nice meal and it got one of the two turkeys out of the freezer.  When I was going to work Friday morning I noticed one of our neighbors had put a fridge or stand-up freezer out by the road with a free sign on it.  I called my husband immediately and told him where I had seen it.  He grabbed it right away.  It's an upright freezer from probably the 60s or 70s so it's solid.  We put it in the garage and moved the few things that were left in the "middle" chest to that one so the chest freezer could be defrosted and cleaned.  We're still waiting for the new one we ordered from Lowe's.  They know its been shipped but have no idea where it is.  At one point they thought it was in Pennsylvania; then they thoug...

YOP: Week 36

I didn't get any crafting done this week.  I did receive my swap package from the My Favorite Things swap.  Here's what I received: An ample stack of fabric squares.  Most are knitting related, the rest coordinate well.  A book that looks interesting, The Vampire Knitting Club, one of my favorite candies, a skein of Alpaca yarn in a glorious color and cat chair feet.  My daughter commandeered a couple of them already.  I'm going to put a set on the clothes chair in the bedroom.  All in all it was a fun swap.  I also signed up for the Halloween Mini and got my partner assignment.  I've got some ideas brewing for that one.      Since my knitting mojo still hasn't returned despite the change in weather, I picked up a book (kindle) series instead.  About two years ago I read an excellent science fiction romance; The Viridian Priestess.  I know I talked about it.  It was my favorite boo...

YOP: Week 34

I did some crafting this week, but it was all for the swap.  I was nearly out of interfacing so I ran over to The Quilt Shop in Watertown.  I'd been there once a couple of years ago and thought their prices were very good considering they are independent and Joanne and Hobby Lobby were both in Watertown at the time.  They have really expanded and have a tremendous selection.  They have more novelty type fabrics now, which is what I prefer for my bags, so I will be going there much more often.... probably too much.  I got interfacing and I found two prints that were perfect for my swapee.  I really wasn't expecting to find what I did.  I sewed a bag with those two prints and two of the fabrics I picked up from Walmart.  The Walmart fabric was acceptable.  Not groundbreaking, but decent enough that if I find cute prints I'll probably grab them.  I finished the handknit earlier today.  I want to steam block it yet, ...
