Year of Projects: Week 15

I've been working steadily on my swap project.  I finished the knitting as of Friday morning.  I just finished washing and blocking out the item along with the second pair of Drops of Spring Mitts.  I still have one more step for the swap project.  The yarn I used, Briggs & Little Heritage, is a minimally processed rustic wool, so what I made is a bit rough to the touch.  It's not a next to skin item but none the less, I want to do a lining with fleece.  Back on Monday I didn't feel like working on the swap project and I had picked up that new dishcloth cotton, so I whipped up a quick round dishcloth.

The new yarn I grabbed was Peaches & Creme Stripey.  The skein put up is a little bit different from the Original line, but its the same yardage.  I actually looked at the labels for the Stripey after I knit the round dishcloth.  The Stripey is milled in China whereas the Original in Canada.  According to the label the Stripey is worsted, but I beg to differ.  I'd call it a DK at a stretch.  I knit all my dishcloths on a US6 regardless of what the pattern calls for.  I prefer a nice dense fabric for dishcloths.  I struggled with the 6s for the Stripey.  I may try 5s for the rest of the yarn.  The cotton, however, is very very soft; to the point I could consider the cloth I made a facecloth instead of a dishcloth.  I haven't yet decided if I'll purchase more than the two skeins.

On Saturday I was invited to a Cider Party, for lack of a better moniker.  My cousin and his wife have a cider press so they get a bunch of apples and make a whole load of cider.  I only brought back a little because its fresh and I'll need to drink it over the few days.

The apples are crushed in the hopper up top and fall down into the press.  The press has the cloth filter/lining already in it.

Once the press is full the apples get tucked inside and the cover gets put on.  Then its squeezing time.

Then delicious cider pours out the bottom.  It was cold, rainy and dreary.  I had taken just Liara with me and she got cold despite wearing my jacket on top of her own, so we didn't stay much more than an hour.  I also needed to make a couple stops on the way back so it worked out well.  She was able to crank the handle a little bit to press the apples so she had fun.

I'm writing this post just after midnight, so to me its still Saturday.  I have a few things I hope to get done on Sunday.  I want to make a couple pairs of Halloween earrings and I'd like to do some sewing.  I'm also hoping to get everything else done for the swap this coming week.  Ideally, I'd like to get it in the mail the following week.  I was going to talk about what shows I've been watching over the past few months, but I'm afraid it would make this post way too long.  I will mention that I started watching Outlander earlier this week and I'm absolutely obsessed.  I consumed the first season in only four days.  I think that's it for me this week.
Until later.  Happy crafting!

  1. I've never entered a swap.....good luck with finishing up yours. The cider press is really cool...TFS! Interesting about the Peaches and Cream yarn. I've found some differences in worsted yarns....Caron Soft is more DK than worsted. I wouldn't have known that when I first started knitting and crocheting but now I can spot it. I started watching Outlander but then canceled whatever channel it was on. I should start over with it. I'm watching Grant a 3 part series narrated by Chernow who wrote the book Grant which I read and it was excellent. I like Amercan history. Have a great week!

  3. Liz here (Highlandheffalump) what fun the apple pressing sounds. You’ve reminded me to get some more dish cloths knitted up, I love the pretty shape and colours of yours.

YOP: Week 34

I did some crafting this week, but it was all for the swap.  I was nearly out of interfacing so I ran over to The Quilt Shop in Watertown.  I'd been there once a couple of years ago and thought their prices were very good considering they are independent and Joanne and Hobby Lobby were both in Watertown at the time.  They have really expanded and have a tremendous selection.  They have more novelty type fabrics now, which is what I prefer for my bags, so I will be going there much more often.... probably too much.  I got interfacing and I found two prints that were perfect for my swapee.  I really wasn't expecting to find what I did.  I sewed a bag with those two prints and two of the fabrics I picked up from Walmart.  The Walmart fabric was acceptable.  Not groundbreaking, but decent enough that if I find cute prints I'll probably grab them.  I finished the handknit earlier today.  I want to steam block it yet, ...

YOP: Week 52

As the year comes to a close, I've been looking at my queue and starting to plan out a few projects for 2025.  After having to cold sheep for the majority of this past year, I'm going into next year with some guidelines.  When I purchase yarn, I really want to stick to purchasing for specific patterns.  I took advantage of Miss Babs annual gratitude sale and purchased specifically for two patterns.  I also want to continue to knit from stash whenever possible.  I have paired up yarn with patterns for several and they've been moved up in my queue.     I'll have more time, so I plan to participate in several swaps in 2025.  I'll be getting yarn from these so I'm going to try to stick to swaps only for "unplanned" stash acquisition.  I have several carry-over projects I didn't get to this year, which seems to be a theme every year.  So tentatively this is my meager list for 2025: - Butterfly--Papillon  with Urth Ya...

YOP: Week 35

Not much to report this week.  I didn't do much crafting.  I finished the swap, got it packaged up and mailed out.  It should have arrived to my recipient yesterday.  I'll share what I made.  The theme was Favorite Things.  She likes the colors pale yellow and deep dark red and dragons, so I went all out with the dragons.  I chose  Dragon Scale Mitts  for the handmade item.  I used Madeline Tosh Sport in the Tart colorway.   My camera doesn't really do this colorway justice.  It has more depth in real life.  I think they came out nicely though. I was able to find dragon fabric at The Quilt Shop.  I made a reversible project bag. I paired each dragon fabric with one of her favorite colors.  Liara really liked the dragon fabric as well.  I'm probably going to get some more when I go again.  I also sent some stationary items and a bunch of Swedish Fish, which were also things she had req...
