The 2023 Lewis County Fair is just a few weeks away. Last year was the first year ever I had myself together enough to enter some of my crafting into exhibition. This coming year I'm entering even more items. I thought it would be fun to look back at last year first, since I wasn't blogging at the time.
Permutation Hat |
Permutation Hat |
First up was Permutation. Pattern is by Hunter Hammerson. (It is currently not available for purchase). I used yarn I received specifically for this pattern in a swap. While I was away from blogging, I've been participating in swaps. Most of them have been through the Nerdy Swaps swap group on Ravelry. The black yarn is Valley Yarns Northampton and the self-striping is Happy Sheep Wool Power Print. It was my first time using either of these yarns. The Wool Power Print is slightly heavier than the Northampton, so it made the star stitches a bit tricky, but overall, I was really happy with how the hat came out. These were pre-blocking pictures. After I made this hat, I used the star stich pattern to make a matching set of mittens for myself. I also knit this pattern again with different yarn for a dear friend of mine.
Here's a picture of the hat at the fair. I'll admit to bragging a bit, I got first place ribbons on all three of my entries.
Permutation Mittens |
The aforementioned mittens made to match. I completed these in October, after I started traveling. More on that later.

What I really like about Hunter Hammerson's patterns is that she gives lots of options. This pattern had multiple charts for the star stitch placement and a few different crown decrease options. There is a fourth color in this hat at the crown decrease, but it was a very similar purple, so its hard to see. This was leftover yarn from a shawl/scarf I knit on commission for a friend. Its Juniper Moon Farm Herriot. It was a dream to knit with, so I jumped at the chance to knit another item for my friend Karen out of the left overs.
Back to the fair entries. The other two items I submitted were sewn bags. The first was a large drawstring style project bag I had made.
I'm a sucker for Batiks. I use this bag quite often. It holds several cakes of yarn and a huge project easily. The second bag is a box style bag. I had picked up the outside fabric specifically for making project bags because it was too cute to pass up.
Its Alpacas! My sewing room is now our unfinished basement and the lighting down there is sub-optimal to say the least. I also just realized I don't have any pictures of the inside of this bag. Its a dark blue speckled Batik. As I already shamelessly stated, I got first place on both these bags as well.
I only have a few pictures of our time at last years fair. Liara and I went on the absolute hottest of the days for children's day. We made sure to take it slow and stay hydrated, it ultimately was a good day.
One of the things I love about this county fair is that the Midway is done by the same people every year, so the rides are the same ones I grew up with. We both love this Carousel. We rode multiple times until she took a turn on every horse, cat, or rabbit she wanted. I also love that this fair is relatively small and not too crowded. I'm really looking forward to this year and sharing how I do on my entries.
Until later. Happy Crafting.
