The Last Fury

I finished my ARC of The Last Fury by Talina Arden.  It was phenomenal.  It's a little hard to describe as its a dark dystopian urban fantasy romance.  It had traditional fantasy creature elements like Fae, Vampires, Warewolves, Witches and Demons.  It was also set in a near future dystopian city with modern technology and terminology.  It seems as though the magical world pushed its way into "ours" at some point and although humans are aware of the magic most of them try to avoid it.  Magic weilding folk also keep to their own parts of the city as do the humans.  The FMC is an EMT who works graveyard shift and has done so for the last eight years.  Sera has been feeling a power growing for the last few months.  When the book opens she has just utilized her power for the first time.  She has no idea what it nor how she's done it.  Her and her shad partner take another call.  In this alleyway while attending another patient, shadows threaten her and she unleashes her power again.  The MMC, Kade watches her from a short distance.  Sera completely destroys this creature, cleanly and instantly recognizes her power.  He believes she's a Fury.  Except that Furys haven't existed for 500 years, being hunted to extinction.  Sera's use of her power shines like a beacon and now all the Corrupted are drawn to her like a moth to a flame.  After her shift she goes home, blows all the lights in her apartment, and inadvertently blows up her microwave as well.  She can't control her powers.  A few Corrupted converge on her location and Kade transports her with his shadows.  The shadow travel knocks her out and she wakes up in an unfamiliar place with many many questions, most of which Kade manages not to answer.  He doesn't want to overwhelm her with all the info and political issues that come with it, but in trying to protect her, he mainly just drives her away.  There is a pretty undeniable attraction between them immediately but the build to anything is very slow.  I really enjoyed how this unfolded.  It felt different from what I've been reading lately, in a gritty, imperfect way.  It felt like The Matrix mixed with the creatures and lore of Supernatural and the Corruption elements felt like Ghost in the Shell.  The story had a good pace with quite a few twists and turns I didn't see coming.  The spice was good, not overly descriptive but well done.  The ending was gutting and I'm really looking forward to the next book.
