Knit Crochet Blog Week Day One

Day One (Monday 11th May): If You Were Yarn. If you were a type or brand of yarn, which would you be? Are you a classic pure wool? Is there extra tension but a bit of bounce in you because of your high twist? Would you be more like a high-maintenance, strictly hand-wash fluffy angora or a ‘bring it on’ acrylic, bravely heading into the world of possible baby-sick laundering disasters knowing that you will always come out bright and unharmed?

     If I had been asked this question back in January of 2014 I think my answer would be very different from the one I'm about to give today.  Since that time I have started my second new job and have moved my entire household to a smaller city.  Granted the move was what I wanted, but there has been a transition period for me after leaving everything I'd known and become accustomed to behind after 12 years.  I've made new friends twice, gotten used to different policies and procedures twice.  This second transition has been a bit harder.  I'm learning a new computer system, I'm at a smaller hospital which means phlebotomy and more responsibility as I'm a generalist again.  Had I been asked this when I was still with Lab Alliance I would have called myself a felted single, high maintenance hand-wash wool that had been felted from stress related mistreatment... I would have been fairly cheap.  The kind of yarn that should be worth more, but someone got for a really great price and didn't know it.  NOW well, I would describe myself as a  4-ply super-wash wool.  A great hand-dyed one with depth and interest.  Fairly expensive, so I'm treated properly, ultimately I'm worth the price.  I can get dirty because I can be washed.  I'm durable because I'm tightly spun, but balanced.  I roll with the punches.  I can be frogged and reworked and never bat an eye.  I'm versatile, I'm a workhorse, I can be whatever your imagination comes up with.  Not only am I nice to look at I'm functional.  Start with one idea and end up somewhere else entirely, its cool, I've been there and already done that!

     At this point I could describe myself as many yarns, but there's a good start.  I like to think I've come a long way in a year and a half.  I'm glad I've left the old me behind.  I'm happier now and less stressed out.  I have a lot of experience under my belt and can be a real asset to my new employer.  Hopefully Samaritan will be my last job change ever.  (Unless my some miracle I do get to run a yarn shop someday.)
