I finished City of Snakes by Mariet Kay. It was a 5 star read for me. There will be another book in the series, so it ended with plot points still needing to be resolved. It was fabulous though. This book and Born of Starlight are comfort style reads for me. They have just what I personally like. Fairy tale re-telling, engaging and witty characters. Good banter between the love interests, friendships, found family, magic/fantasy elements, world building and a nice amount of spice that doesn't detract from the story. I'm excited for the third book to come out. I got the feeling as I was reading CoS that the next one will be a sleeping beauty re-telling.
As soon as I finished City of Snakes, I started the book I got in the Favorite Things swap; The Vampire Knitting Club by Nancy Warren.
This was a cozy paranormal episodic read. It was quick and fun and another 5 star read for me. I've started the next in the series. The FMC comes to Oxford to visit her grandmother after a breakup. When she gets there she finds her grandmother has died and has left her with the yarn shop she ran for over 50 years. Lucy the FMC then discovers her grandmother was actually murdered and there is a nest of vampires who live under the yarn shop. Lucy's grandmother was bitten by one of them to "save" her and now she's undead. Lucy works on solving her grandmother's murder and decides weather or not she's going to keep the yarn shop. Spoiler; she does. Oh and she's a witch, just like her grandmother. It was a fast read at only 250ish pages; the pace was nice and quick and it was well set up. There are 15 books in the series. The next one is Stitches and Witches and I'm a few chapters into it. There is no spice in any of these. They're all available on Kindle Unlimited. So far they've been perfect for cozy spooky season reads.
It was a pretty packed week. The grave side service for my great-aunt was nice. I got to see some family briefly, which is always nice. There is something going around my immediate family. Ronon was out of school for the last half of the week. Before I left yesterday for work Liara had caught it and my husband was complaining of a headache and sore throat. I'm hoping this misses me. I'm still coughing from whatever I caught two weeks ago. It has cooled down here nicely. We had a good hard frost Wednesday night. I've put a small scarf and a pair of fingerless-mitts in the pocket of my middle-weight jacket for the mornings. It's chilly enough in the mornings that I need them, but not in the afternoon when I get out of work. We've also gotten the winter accessories out and into the storage bench by the door. I still need to haul all the woolens out of where I store them and get them organized. I might start those fingerless mitts I've been putting off. That's it for me this week. This upcoming week should be less hectic I think. Work was a beast last week. We figured it was carryover from the full moon. It was crazy busy all week and we had instrument problems every day, ugh. I hate walking into a crap storm, but it did make the days go by really fast. Until later, happy crafting and reading.

I love the fall but it does make it hard to dress when I need long pants and a sweater in the morning, shorts and a t-shirt in the afternoons, then back to pants and sweater in the evening!!
ReplyDeleteVampire cozy mysteries. May need to look into those. Thanks for the reviews. Fall has finally arrived here in the desert of Arizona. So nice to be able to go outside and not feel like a blast furnace.
ReplyDeleteI have kindle unlimited so I might look up those books. I have so many books on my virtual TBR pile that I'll never finish. I've got the bug too. I got it really bad this time. It's already been a week and it just doesn't want to go away.
